Clear access first
Keep permanent clearance around the electrical panel, the water heater, the furnace and any shut-off valve. Nothing should be stored against them or in front of them, and the walking path to each must stay open.
Work in zones
Group by how often you reach for something: tools and cleaning supplies at hand height, seasonal decorations and luggage up high, yard equipment near the door. Lidded stackable bins with labels beat open piles because they survive being restacked.
Use the walls before the floor
Wall tracks, hooks and shelving free the floor and keep things off concrete that can sweat in winter. Fix anything load-bearing into framing, respect the stated weight limits, and have heavy overhead racks installed professionally where the mounting is uncertain.
Watch heat and chemicals
Garages here get very warm in summer. Keep paint, aerosols, fuel and batteries out of direct heat and follow the storage instructions on each label. Take unwanted paint, solvents and old batteries to your county's household hazardous-waste program rather than the kerb.
