Size first, rating second
The printed size on the side of your current filter is the size to buy. A filter that is even slightly loose lets air bypass it entirely, which defeats the point regardless of how good the filter is.
What MERV ratings mean in practice
A higher MERV number captures smaller particles but restricts airflow more. Many older local systems with undersized ducting run poorly at high ratings. A mid-range pleated filter changed regularly usually outperforms a high-rating filter left in too long.
How often to change it
Every one to three months is typical, sooner during wildfire smoke season or if you have pets. Write the date on the filter edge when you install it so you are not guessing.
When the filter is not the problem
